Located in Alwar, Rajasthan, this 16,000 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse is a soil-based cucumber growing facility with 48,000 plants — a large-scale operation set in one of Rajasthan's more temperate pockets, within reach of the Delhi–NCR fresh market.

Alwar sits in north-eastern Rajasthan at around 265 metres above sea level, at the edge of the Aravalli range, with a semi-arid steppe climate that is noticeably gentler than the state's desert interior. The Aravalli hills shelter the city from the hottest desert winds, so summer peaks around 41°C in May rather than the 50°C seen further west, and winters, while cool, rarely bite as hard. Rainfall is around 660 mm a year, but it is heavily compressed — August alone averages over 200 mm, and the great majority falls in a short July-to-September monsoon, leaving a long dry season on either side with pre-monsoon humidity dropping toward 20%.

For cucumber, that profile creates two pressure points rather than a single extreme. The short, intense monsoon lands hard on a tender vine crop — heavy August downpours batter foliage, split fruit, and, with the humidity that follows, drive downy mildew and other foliar disease through a fast-growing canopy. Then the long dry season swings the other way, with hot, low-humidity pre-monsoon air pushing a shallow-rooted, thirsty crop into water stress. Between the two, the open field offers only narrow, reliable windows.

The Structure

A 16,000 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse was installed to convert those narrow windows into continuous, large-scale production. Through the monsoon, the structure's most important job is a dry canopy: keeping the intense August rain off the crop so foliage stays dry and disease pressure stays low, while ventilation aligned to the prevailing wind flushes humid air through rather than letting it settle. Through the dry season, the enclosed canopy holds humidity steadier than the parched outside air, easing the transpiration load on the crop and trimming the irrigation it needs to stay productive.

That combination is what makes scale work here. Buffered from both the monsoon and the dry-heat extremes, cucumber can run in back-to-back cycles across most of the year, and across 16,000 sqm that adds up to a serious, consistent supply of a fast-moving crop — well positioned for the large fresh-produce demand of the nearby Delhi–NCR belt.

The crop is grown in ground soil, with the polyhouse managing the air, rain, and heat above it — keeping established local soil agronomy intact while removing the seasonal swings a tender, fast-cycle vine cannot absorb in the open.
