Located in Raigad, on Maharashtra's Konkan coast, this 3,200 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse is a soilless facility producing capsicum and cherry tomato - two high-value fruiting crops grown under cover to keep them clear of the coast's relentless humidity and heavy monsoon rain.

Raigad sits along the Arabian Sea south of Mumbai, with a coastal tropical-monsoon climate. The sea keeps temperatures equable — summer highs around 38°C in April, mild winters — but the defining feature here isn't heat, it's moisture. Humidity stays high through much of the year, climbing to around 90% in the monsoon months, and the Konkan belt draws one of the heaviest monsoons in the state, with intense rain concentrated from June to October. For capsicum and cherry tomato, that's the central problem. Both crops are acutely vulnerable to humidity-driven disease — leaf mould, early and late blight, bacterial spot, anthracnose — and persistent wet foliage in a warm, humid environment is exactly what those pathogens need. Open-field, a single monsoon season can be enough to lose a crop.

The Structure

A 3,200 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse was installed to break that cycle. On the Konkan coast, the structure's most important job is a dry canopy and moving air: complete shelter from monsoon rainfall, keeping foliage and fruit dry, paired with ventilation aligned to the prevailing sea breeze to push humid, stagnant air out and hold the internal environment below the threshold where fungal and bacterial disease takes hold. An NVPH delivers that passive humidity and rain management without the cost of mechanical control.

Both crops are grown on a soilless system rather than in ground soil. For capsicum and cherry tomato in a high-humidity setting, that's a deliberate defence: a clean, controlled root zone removes soil-borne disease from the equation entirely and gives precise command over water and nutrients, supporting the uniform fruit quality and sustained yield both crops are grown for. Between a dry, ventilated canopy and a sterile root zone, the structure attacks disease pressure from both directions
