Located in Gauribidanur, Karnataka, this 10,000 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse is a soilless turmeric growing facility with 75,000 plants - a long-duration rhizome crop taken out of the ground and into a controlled, protected environment.
Gauribidanur sits on the Deccan plateau in Chikkaballapur district, north of Bengaluru, at around 910 metres above sea level, with a tropical wet-and-dry climate. Summers are hot and dry, with temperatures climbing toward 40°C, the monsoon runs from June to September, and winters are mild and pleasant with temperatures between roughly 15°C and 25°C. Annual rainfall is moderate, at around 800 to 900 mm, with September and July the wettest months. For turmeric, the difficulty is exposure over time. It is a long-duration crop, in the ground for eight to nine months from planting to harvest, which means a single planting has to survive the full arc of the year - the pre-monsoon heat, the wet months, and the cool, dry winter that follows. Rhizome rot and soil-borne pathogens build through the wet season, and open-field crops carry that risk for the whole cycle with no way to intervene.
The Structure
A 10,000 sqm Naturally Ventilated Polyhouse was installed to hold conditions steady across that long cycle. At Gauribidanur's elevation, the base climate is already workable, so mechanical climate control isn't warranted — what the crop needs is shelter from heavy monsoon rain, a buffer against peak summer heat, and consistent airflow. An NVPH provides that passively, with ventilation aligned to the prevailing wind so air keeps moving through the canopy and the crop stays dry and protected through the wet months.
The crop is grown on a soilless system rather than in ground soil, and for turmeric that is the decisive choice. A clean, sterile medium removes rhizome rot and soil-borne disease pressure from the equation, which matters more for a crop sitting in place for the better part of a year than for a short-cycle one. It also gives precise control over water and nutrition through each growth stage, and makes harvest cleaner and less damaging to the rhizome — supporting uniform, high-quality output across all 75,000 plants.
